Department of Health: -Appreciating Regulatory Agencies

Some daycare directors have very strong, not always positive, feelings about visits from the Department of Health. After all, it’s the Department of Health that generally licenses daycares and what they say goes. The difficulty for some directors is accepting that different inspectors see things differently, and different inspectors can have very different personalities and expectations.

For example, there was a ladder attached to the wall of my rooftop play area. It lead to another higher section of the roof where the air conditioning unit was. The idea was for workmen to use the ladder to access to maintain the air conditioning unit. That was the plan, and the plan, to date, had worked just fine. All other parts of the rooftop play area had been fenced in and passed inspection many times.

The building had been inspected by the Fire Department, The Building Department and the Department of Health. I should mention that these inspections were regular, announced and unannounced and each time everyone said everything was in compliance. (That beautiful word all directors like to hear.)

One day, after 10 years of inspections, a new inspector showed up to look over the same territory. Ho-Hum. Imagine my surprise when the inspector pointed out that that ladder, the very one that so many of us had looked at over the years, was not properly guarded from use by the very children we were trying to protect. After all, from a child’s point-of-view, a ladder mounted to the side of the wall was just another plaything. We were not in compliance, we were given a 30-day period to correct the situation, and worst of all, we were living with a very dangerous situation. Until this violation could be corrected, in the interest of safety, we were not to use the rooftop.

It’s always good to have another set of eyes view what’s going on in childcare. For this reason alone, I am always grateful for the work inspectors do. Of course I’d like everything to be in compliance every time they visit because that makes me look good. But sometimes you can’t see the tree for the forest. The positive interaction between regulatory agencies and childcare professionals can only bring positive results for all concerned.

Inspectors are here to protect children. That’s true. They are also here to use their expertise to protect teachers and administrators as well. What if…that ladder had been discovered by a child who got to the top of the higher, unfenced rooftop before the teacher could get to him?

Chemistry V Cultutre

Bill Nelson asked:

Teamwork is a word that conjures up a number of different ideas, thoughts, philosophies and discussions. Basically we all know what teamwork is, that is the coming together of a group of individuals to work towards a pre determined outcome.

But once again as we all know this is easier said than done. You have a combination of different personalities, experiences, philosophies, wants and needs. To bring these together is certainly a challenge even for the most experienced leader.

As many different areas that are required to come together to create a team there is an equal if not increased number of ways this can be done. To try to outline the many

different ways this can be done would take more time and space than we have available. However there are two areas I would like to work through with you.

Now as I said there are many different concepts that come into allowing a team to be created. One of the most talked about and worked towards is team chemistry. Team chemistry can be based around any number of principals and elements.

Team chemistry can be based around such things as the outcome or target that the team is working towards, it can be based around the coming together of the individual skills within the team. These skills can be vastly different but compliment each other nicely or they can be alike and allow the individual team members a common trait.

We often hear sporting teams talk about how their success came from their chemistry. That is for some reason either by design or by luck the individual skills that they possess came into alignment and success was attained. Now certainly the goal is

to be successful and part of the process to see that success attained is the development and growth of the team chemistry.

One of the reverse sides of chemistry is that ‘chemistry’ as a concept does not necessarily address the coming together of all skills, attributes, concepts, philosophies, standards and ideals of the members of the team. Chemistry can be one

dimensional and in the majority of cases usually is.

That is one particular area comes together to form the chemistry. It could be even one or two areas that cause the chemistry. The bottom line is the chemistry is there the team is going well because of it and hopefully somewhere down the track success will be secured.

So where does the problem lie? Chemistry needs to be expanded so that the success can become more consistent. The element of team chemistry is multiplied to take into account all areas within the team. It begins to create and develop something that

is more consistent, it is stronger, it allows for greater success, it continually brings everyone within the team together to work towards a common goal with a common purpose and with a chemistry that cover all areas and all within the team.

The team has now transgressed from working on developing team chemistry to working toward and developing a culture. The difference in this change of focus may not seem much but the reality is that the difference between team chemistry and

developing a culture is as different as night and day and as diverse as chalk and cheese.

A culture develops consistency across all areas of the team and its focus. It brings the chemistry of the team together in each and every way. The strength of a true culture is vastly superior to a one or two dimensional chemistry combination.

The development of a true culture is not an easy process. I use the word true, as I believe there is disparity between what some regard as culture and what is true culture. A true culture without taking away from the individual attributes of the

people within it gives everyone a common vision, direction and purpose.

It demands of everyone in a consistent but different manner. It clearly defines everyone’s role and highlights the significance of those roles. It holds the individuals and the team accountable in each and every way. It sets the standards, the ethics and the integrity of the team. It constantly highlights the skills, experience, abilities and knowledge of everyone associated with the team.

As I said earlier the development of this type of true culture is not an easy one. In its embryonic stages it takes many hours of thought and discussion. It will also require the making of many tough and in some cases unpopular decisions. But as with

anything worthwhile the outcome will be a result of the quality of the process.

If the difficult concepts are addressed and resolved then the culture of the team will be based upon a strong foundation. It will allow everyone to realise they are part of something special. The individual team members will take on the responsibility and pride in seeing the culture continually upheld and developed.
